Fly of the year 2009!

December 31st, 2009

Fluttering caddis

This  tailed caddis tied  with deer hair produced the most fish this past year and deserves this year’s Fly of the Year award! An all round dry fly favorite for it’s natural colors and high float-ability.

Recipe: Tie in a generous mount of deer hair for tail (almost like a humpy pattern), next tie in a piece of this copper wire and  two reddish brown hackles. Wind hackle back to thorax and wire palmered over that.  Tie another generous portion of none stacked deer hair for wing. Whip finish. Done!

I think you will find this classic dry fly a favorite of yours after you try it on most streams in our beloved Sierra Nevada! Tight Lines and Happy New Year’s friends and family! PM

Honey's Happy

Yup,  that’s my girl! She loves the snow! How free to be happy just out enjoying nature hiking and taking in all the sights and smells after a fresh snow storm! They say a dog is like their master, hmmm… yes that’s me too!

Snoak

Snoak

Words I invent! Snoak is my newest word I came up with after taking this picture.

Definition of Snoak= A Oak tree in a snow storm.

Use= “I feel as strong as a snoak today.”  or  “This coat is so warm it feels snoaky.”

Have a snoak-filled day! PM

Arroyo Creek

December 8th, 2009

Arroyo creek

This is a local creek that comes out of the dam and flows through Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore. It was here that we spent many many days during the summer months fishing and catching snakes, crawdads, turtles and bull frogs. Often my good friend Tim and I would take a single man raft down it and make small fires to dry out our wet clothes. It seems a shame that kids these days don’t get to explore, build forts, and have access to such areas that have now become parks. Not that I’m against parks, I love them now. It’s just that I believe guys need to exercise their maleness discovering new territory! That’s why I enjoy taking young men camping and doing the stuff I used to do as a youth. PM

Snow in Livermore?

December 7th, 2009

Looking towards my true north

That’s right we had a rare snow day in Livermore California. A weather system that came down from Canada is bringing colder temperatures and even some of the white stuff to the surrounding hills. It was all the buzz today as I went from place to place people were talking about the snow! So I decided to take a hike up to the top of the Dam at Lake Del Valle and shoot some pictures so all  of you could enjoy it too! Honey had a blast pushing through the snow with her nose and getting muddy where ever she could find a puddle! Ha! What fun!

The Light…

December 5th, 2009

Eel River at Dusk

….is always brightest after the darkest hour. Light brings hope of reward, peace in anxiousness, truth in deception, and love where there was hatred. I’m basking in the light of this day, His glow, and His promises for His purposes. He is the Everlasting Father of Lights. The Prince of Peace. Wonderful Counselor. He holds all things together. Makes all things new. Redeems the helpless. He is my Everything. My Light for my path. My Light for my future. My Light of grace. He is sufficient to meet every need, fix any problem, fill any void, provide for any and every single poverty. He is Light.

“I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.”  Jesus

This is what Christmas Lights are meant to represent. So when you see those sparkling beautiful colors this season, let them remind you of His unconditional love and grace he wants you to experience through Jesus Christ His only begotten Son. God’s Greatest Gift to us! Immanuel. God with Us.

Fan Tailed Bugger

December 4th, 2009

Fan Tailed Bugger

Working on a new type of bugger here. This big fan in the tail has bright gold colors and is split in two. There’s actually another fan just like it on the opposite side so looking down it looks like  moth or butterfly wing’s. I used the tan chenile to split the wing tail and a double dose of dyed grizzley hackle wrapped back and then forward. Also used gold tinsel to match the heavy gold tungsten bead head and 30 wraps of lead core to get down deep fast.

Yop never know how these flies will work until you get out and test them. I’ve tied some prtty unusual fly patterns with mixed results. Another time I tied a big fan like this in the tail and caught a huge small mouth bass! Whatever happens I’m sure it will be fun to use and exciting to see what it produces! Tight Lines! PM
