Paul,
I just fished the pit for the first time this past weekend. I was a little disappointed, the catch rate was not quite 4/hr…I hooked a lot more than I landed…pretty country none the less. I live in Oakland so its a little frustrating being 5hrs from trout. I almost wish it were winter again so I could be below Goodwin dam again. I thought I’d ask since you know a lot about the Stan: have you ever fished the middle fork between Beardsley and Sand Bar Flat? If so, have you heard anything about how its fishing? Hope the knee is healing fast for you.
Best,
David
Hi David,
The pit and other rivers nearby can be tricky. You almost need someone with you the first week or two just to get a feel for the type of flies and techniques to use. I understand your frustration on being so far from good water! Me too! Yeah I have fished that section of river above sandbar flat. I didn’t have alot of success there, but that was before I knew how to nymph fish. I’d like to go back. maybe I could meet you there sometime? The knee isn’t too hot right now and I got some other problems for the next month I have to address so i won’t be blogging or fly fishing much. Hope to get back into the swing of things in July! PM
Hey Paul,
I’d love to meet ya sometime on the Stan. Speaking of which…I fished the usual spots today under Goodwin Dam…I’m speechless! Today was a personal record of 27 landed. I had noticed the flows had gone down to 530 cfs from 800 cfs, so I thought..what the heck. I went anyway, despite what the folks at my local fly shop said about high flow. My arm is killing me from high sticking all day. I used birds nests with a smaller caddis nymph dropper and a bunch of weight. Thank God for the Stan! I was feeling a little bummed about my arduous pit river trip. All in all an amazing day. As I was leaving though I noticed some folks poaching. I let them know what the rules are, but they didn’t understand why power-bait wasn’t acceptable. I’m a little worried. They bagged a couple of really beautiful bows. Whats the best course of action in situations like that? Hope you are well.
Best,
David
